How to travel pain-free

Getting ready to take a much-needed vacation? Don't let it become a pain in your back. With the physical demands of traveling and touring, there are plenty of ways to aggravate or cause discomfort while you're away. Here are some tips to help you enjoy your getaway pain-free:

Pack and lift luggage carefully
If you're flying to your destination, you likely have up to 50 pounds of luggage to pack before baggage fees kick in. Even if you're far below that cap, the weight can still put a strain on you. Nowadays, most of us use rolling suitcases, which certainly helps alleviate some of that stress. However, in the instances when you do have to lift your suitcase, use best practices by bending at your knees, not your waist, and keeping your spine straight.

So you don't have to carry a lot of weight, pack sparingly. Start long before your trip so you can make thoughtful decisions about what you'll actually need during your trip. If you're not limited by airplane regulations, use multiple lightweight bags instead of trying to fit all your stuff into one heavy suitcase.

Take breaks to stretch or walk
Whether it's by plane, train or automobile, traveling means spending long hours in an uncomfortable seat. Even if you don't already suffer from back problems, this experience can leave anyone writhing in pain. To avoid that discomfort, try to take breaks so you can stretch and walk around, if possible. Changing your position helps relieve some of the strain and tension on your spine and muscles.

Support lower back and feet in transportation seats
Another way you can improve your traveling experience is by giving your lower back the support it needs while in transit. In the car, tilt your seat back and use a rolled up towel behind your lower back for lumbar support. During a flight, you should lean your seat back and use travel pillows to support your neck and back. Lifting your feet is also helpful in thwarting pain. If your seat is too high, use some sort of footrest to level your knees. You should also keep your feet firmly planted on the floor in front of you for better back support.

Wear the proper footwear
When you reach your vacation spot, you'll probably be walking around to see the sights. If you're not wearing the right shoes, you can easily cause yourself a great deal of pain. Make sure you wear shoes with supportive soles. For additional pain prevention, stretch at the start of and throughout each day to keep your muscles limber and prepared.
